When Books become Movies: H.G. Wells - The Time Machine

From the book by H.G. Wells, in the heart of Victorian England, an inquisitive gentleman known only as the Time Traveler constructs an elaborate invention that hurtles him hundreds of thousands of years into the future. There he finds himself in the violent center of the ultimate conflict between beings of light and creatures of darkness. Two races, a mild gentle race, and a cannibalistic one living underground. His machine is stolen by the underground race and he must risk being captured (and eaten) to return to his own time.

This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. Wells also introduced the idea of time being the "fourth dimension"

Of course I'm a fan of the book's original cover, the art work is nothing more then a Sphinx with the Egyptian head-dress of nobility, which is indeed a symbol of timelessness for it's actual birth record is unknown to archaeologists and it is dated to be much older then the pyramids of Giza. A line from the book that I enjoyed was: "You must follow me carefully. I shall have to controvert one or two ideas that are almost universally accepted. The geometry, for instance, they taught you at school is founded on a misconception."

Brilliant Book!

Movie Download: Dune (1984 Film) Science Fiction Classic

It is a distant galaxy in the far future comprised of many factional families who each control a certain region in space. The year is 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet also called DUNE, Arrakis is the only source of 'Melange' a vital drug used by the Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two rival families, The Atreides and The Harkonnens, fight for control of the mining operations of Melange on Arrakis. When the Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen. Duke Leto's son Paul and Paul's mother Lady Jessica flee deep into the desert and are befriended by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Due to the influence of the 'Melange' Paul learns he has special powers and he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman and forms an army of warriors and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Emperor Padishah Shaddam IV who is in league with the Harkonnen. Paul vows to avenge his father and sets out to liberate Arrakis and it's people from the Emperor's rule and fulfill his destiny.

Some of the cast members that I recognized were Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame and singer Sting, also one can see Michael Bolton, who was a Drummer in a Knife Fight scene (though he goes uncredited in the original version of the film) lol.

Apple Media and iTunes: what's the future of music downloads and the digital trend?

Via: Apple Insider

This is not the first time I've heard talk of an Apple media download kiosk (and yes, I'm a nerd who'd know about these kinds of things lol), nor does it seem any more plausible this time around that they'll actually do it, but who knows? According to patent docs dredged up by Apple Insider and dating back to the halcyon days of late 2007, the company has certainly put some thought into this, detailing a wireless iTunes station that would allow users to access the iTunes store on the go, using a "virtual physical connection" to the player. As for the kiosk, it would both access media stored locally (perennial faves and new releases) and the rest of the iTunes store over its Internet connection, with users ponying up by either providing their iTunes account credentials or by credit card. Not a bad idea, eh? Well, I won't hold my breath.
