2013: Will Smith and screenwriter Randall Wallace, set to make "The Last Pharaoh"

The Egyptian Pharoah Taharqa: a member of the Nubian dynasty of Egypt, and he was more a ruler over the Kingdom of Kush. His reign can be dated from 690 BC to 664 BC. He was the son of Piye, the Nubian king of Napata who had first conquered Egypt. Mentioned by Greek historian Strabo as one of the greatest military tacticians in the world. He's believed to be Tirhakah, King of Ethiopia, who's mentioned in the Old Testament (noted in the bible in 2 Kings 19:9; and Isaiah 37:9 as Tirhakah) who drove the Assyrian king Sennacherib away from destroying Jerusalem.

Taharqa wasn't just a fighter, he was devoted to peaceful works like restoring temples, and building sanctuaries all over Nubia and Egypt. Nevertheless, his biggest claim to fame is fighting the Assyrians, who invaded Egypt in 677. He didn't exactly defeat them -- they took the city of Memphis and established the 26th dynasty, and Taharqa was driven back to Nubia, where he died in 664.

This movie definitely has the potential of an action packed story because Egypt's history is replete with drama and adventure, but I'm curious as to how it's going to be fleshed out. With screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart) at the helm, I am willing to bet that Taharqa will become a mixture of King Leonidas and William Wallace. The saving of Jerusalem is, I think, the high point of the story and has the most historical relevance ... but I'm sure it will romantically illustrate how he attempted to defend his homeland, and that's reportedly what the film will focus on.

My Conclusion: It will be very interesting to see Will Smith deliver in the history genre and it will have to do better than movies like Troy and Alexander. I will also say what most people won't say...that Will Smith is one of the lightest skinned, socially accepted black actors in Hollywood and he'll play one of the blackest of Pharoahs in Ancient Egypt; so he'll have to go work on his tan, but regardless, I couldn't think of anyone better because Will Smith is the biggest box office draw in the business and a movie of this kind needs his type of commercial appeal, he's black enough to pull if off...lol. Something the movie won't show you is how Historically, it was really the armies of Taharqa's nephew Tantamani who were the ones who briefly wrested control of Egypt from the Assyrians before being driven back to Nubia, making Tantamani, not Taharqa, the last Pharaoh of the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty, but oh well. Another point to bring up is this; President Obama's first term ends on January 20 2013, effectively though on November 4 2012 (if not re-elected). A month before or after the Mayan Doomsday of December 21, 2012. Just around this time is when Will Smith will galvanize the public mind around a black pharoah (symbolically this is Obama) as the last pharoah/president defending the homeland, against the Assyrians (who people will read as being the Arabs, i.e Iran and the Taliban). No one does prescriptive programming like Hollywood lol.

When Books become Movies: H.G. Wells - The Time Machine

From the book by H.G. Wells, in the heart of Victorian England, an inquisitive gentleman known only as the Time Traveler constructs an elaborate invention that hurtles him hundreds of thousands of years into the future. There he finds himself in the violent center of the ultimate conflict between beings of light and creatures of darkness. Two races, a mild gentle race, and a cannibalistic one living underground. His machine is stolen by the underground race and he must risk being captured (and eaten) to return to his own time.

This 32,000 word story is generally credited with the popularisation of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle. Wells also introduced the idea of time being the "fourth dimension"

Of course I'm a fan of the book's original cover, the art work is nothing more then a Sphinx with the Egyptian head-dress of nobility, which is indeed a symbol of timelessness for it's actual birth record is unknown to archaeologists and it is dated to be much older then the pyramids of Giza. A line from the book that I enjoyed was: "You must follow me carefully. I shall have to controvert one or two ideas that are almost universally accepted. The geometry, for instance, they taught you at school is founded on a misconception."

Brilliant Book!

Some of the cast members that I recognized were Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame and singer Sting, also one can see Michael Bolton, who was a Drummer in a Knife Fight scene (though he goes uncredited in the original version of the film) lol.

TRON: A Good Special Effects Movie (with deeper meanings in it for me)

As I walked into what was called the Ultra AVX (Audio Visual Experience) theatre for the TRON movie opening, I couldn't help but overhear people asking there significant others "what's Tron anyway?". Naturally the original Tron movie hasn't been seen for awhile and would only be remembered by the people who were fans of it in the 80's.

THE OLD TRON...

THE NEW TRON...

TRON: to me...was about learning how to PLAY THE GAME to save your life and escape the encroaching shadow of a Global Terror Grid, I smiled as each layer of subliminal meaning kept jumping out at me in 3D quality images. Disney is one of 6 major corporations that set the trends of what social perception is and will be, and TRON was it's most epic movie to date. 27 yrs later Disney releases an updated version of TRON, as the world really is becoming unified by a Smart Grid Technology (the actors in the movie jokingly talk about the creation of Wifi and about how the internet was actually created a long time ago lol). In the 80's it was too far fetched an idea for some, and even now people are still asking...What is Tron?

Go see it...

Who would've thought that The Wizard of Oz contained hidden meanings?

I've always thought The Wizard of Oz (1938 film) to be a classic example of The Hero's Journey, but I later learned that it's much much more than that. The Wizard of Oz movie didn't become an annual television event until the 1950s and 1960s, the book that was to become the movie was written in the year 1900. So this movie took a long time to gain steam. The universal quality of the story and the warmth of the film made it appealing to people of all ages, but who would've thought that The Wizard of Oz contained hidden meanings?

If this movie taught me anything (upon face value, watching it again after all of these years) is that the next time I go looking for my heart's desire, I won't look any further than my own backyard; if it's not there, then I never really lost it to begin with. Those who delve deep into the vices known to man; alcohol, drugs, sex are all people who fit the archetypal figure known as Dorothy.

Dorothy who descends into a magical trance whereby she is lifted from Kansas and transported to the land of Oz goes through a whole heap of trouble before she realizes that the wizard she was seeking was a fraud in the end; and he ends up telling her that she had what she was looking for all along. The central figure Dorothy is a lost soul, looking for hope, from an external source; when all along the kingdom of heaven was WITHIN her.

Dorothy seen above holding her dog 'Toto' which in latin means "the entirety" and the total, or the whole of something which she held for dear life all throughout the movie. The word 'Toto' in latin was often used in reference to land/estates, herein the dog named Toto may in fact symbolize the deed to the land in Kansas which she is hopelessly trying to get back to.

The story starts with Dorothy Gale living in Kansas, which symbolizes the material world, the physical plane where each one of us starts our spiritual journey. Dorothy feels an urge to “go over the rainbow”, to reach the ethereal realm and follow the path to illumination. She has basically passed the first degree by demonstrating the urge to seek a higher truth.

Dorothy is then brought to Oz by a giant cyclone spiraling upward, representing the cycles of karma, the cycle of errors and lessons learned. It also represents the theosophical belief in reincarnation, the round of physical births and deaths of a soul until it is fit to become divine. It is also interesting to note that the Yellow Brick Road of Oz begins as an outwardly expanding spiral. In occult symbolism, this spiral represents the evolving self, the soul ascending from matter into the spirit world.

During her journey along the Yellow Brick road, Dorothy encounters the Scarecrow, the Tin-man and the cowardly Lion who are respectively searching for a brain, a heart and courage. Those odd characters embody the qualities needed by any initiate in order to complete the quest for illumination/enlightenment. After surmounting many obstacles, the party finally reaches Emerald city in order to meet The Wizard.

It is later discovered that the Wizard is a fake charlatan, who scares people into worshipping his authority. In order to obtain illumination Dorothy had to vanquish the wicked witches of the East and the West – who were forming an evil horizontal axis: the material world. She was wise in listening to the advice of the good witches of the North and South – the vertical axis: the spiritual dimension. At the end of the story, Dorothy wakes up in Kansas: she has successfully combined her physical and spiritual life. She is now comfortable being herself again and, despite her family not really believing the details of her quest (the ignorant profane), she can finally say “There is no place like home”.

Movie Review: Eat, Pray, Love (starring Julia Roberts)

I had the chance to watch a movie which I thought was a 'chick flick' at first (not that there's anything wrong with that lol) but upon giving it a chance, I learned that the movie (in theatres now) called Eat, Pray, Love, was really about spirtual transformation. A movie that takes you through one woman's search for her humanity across Italy, India and Indonesia.

Julia Roberts who plays the part of Elizabeth Gilbert; whose marriage and prosperous lifestyle crashed and burned in a grueling divorce, followed by a passionate love affair with a guy named David that ended also in heartbreak. She snaps up the opportunity to fly to Bali to write a story about Yoga vacations. While she's there she meets 'Ketut' a ninth-generation Indonesian medicine man who told her that she worried too much and was desperately in need of something different in her life. Gilbert decided to spend a year abroad — four months each in Italy, India, and Bali. This odyssey was funded by her publisher who was looking forward to seeing what she would write about in this very unusual spiritual pilgrimage.

Italy: Gilbert chose Italy because of the happiness she felt studying Italian. In Rome, she meets Luca Spaghetti, who becomes a friend and introduces her to the pleasures of doing nothing, although she does suffer some Puritan guilt over enjoying the delights of the flesh. Ten days into the trip, Gilbert allows loneliness and depression to bring her down; she plunges into sadness over the end of her affair with David. But her old travel talent for making friends with anybody comes in handy during six weeks of traveling to different Italian cities. She gains 23 pounds, but doesn't allow that to faze her; after all, pleasure must be savored wherever it's found.

India: She then goes to an ashram in a remote rural village in India. There are never more than a few hundred people in residence because the guru is away. Gilbert spends her days in meditation and contemplation. Her work assignment is to scrub the temple floors. Already familiar with the yogic path, Gilbert knows that discontentment, according to Hinduism, is due to our belief that "our limited little egos constitute our entire whole nature." The closer she draws to God, the more she realizes that one of her major obstacles is the inability to let go. Needless to say she goes through a rough time in India before her answers give her inner peace.

Bali: She then goes to the tiny island of Bali for the final leg of her spiritual odyssey. She wants to find some balance between worldly pleasure (Italy) and spiritual devotion (India) — quite a tricky feat and especially hard for Americans who usually swing between extremes. "The Balinese are global masters of balance," she writes, "the people for whom the maintenance of perfect equilibrium is an art, a science and a religion." She reconnects with Ketut, the medicine man she met two years earlier, and they develop a fine relationship. Gilbert also meets a medicine woman who proves to be a very important person in her own emotional education. It was this part in the movie that captured me most intently. The Medicine woman and her daughter were very good healers and herbalists, but they were working out of very poor conditions. Near the end of the movie Gilbert helps fund-raise some money in an effort to secure them a better home, from the very moment the medicine woman realizes that she's been blessed she utters "Now I can help even more people". I swear I wanted to friggen cry...lmao...yes it was beautiful to me.

Don't be a punk...go watch the movie...lol

I support this Movie: Avatar - and James Cameron is a Genius

The recent embrace of digital 3D film is largely due to the efforts of an unexpected figure: James Cameron. Cameron both helped create the modern 3D camera and masterminded the spread of 3D, all so Avatar could blow your mind.

Avatar dates back to 1977, when Cameron was just a truck driver determined to "out-Lucas George Lucas" in the outer space epic genre, but it took decades to get the clout to make as outrageous a project as Avatar. When he first sat down to plan the movie, his tech people told him his vision simply was not possible—"'If we make this, we're doomed,' one of the artists told him. 'It can't be done. The technology doesn't exist.'" He had to wait until after Titanic before he could tackle the project again.

This time, he got more invested in the tech side of it. The problem: He needed an incredibly high-definition camera that could deliver both 2D and 3D, without the headaches that sometimes accompanied two hours of 3D watching. There was a camera that could handle it, made by Sony, but the giant 450-pound unit wasn't feasible for Cameron's style of directing—so in 2000, he went out to Japan and persuaded Sony to re-engineer the camera to his liking. They ended up separating the camera's huge CPU unit from its lens, connected by a cable, thus bringing the handheld weight down to only 50 pounds.

Cameron lent the camera to filmmaker buddies to spread the gospel of 3D so his eventual release of Avatar would have the distribution it needed. Spy Kids 3-D and the Lord of the Rings trilogy opened the doors for technologically astounding epic films, just what Cameron orchestrated. His camera and belief in 3D is setting the stage for the current era of blockbusters—not necessarily something you'd expect from a guy who releases a movie about once every 15 years; but that's what make his movies so good.

The Notorious B.I.G - King of New York

This pic reminded me of the Hitchcock logo outline

In 1946 there was a masterful movie entitled "Notorious" directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Well...on January the 16th 2009 an epic film/biography is scheduled for theatres entitled NOTORIOUS and it's fanfare has raised expectations to dizzying heights. It's directed by George Tillman Jr (his accredited films, Soul Food, Barbershop, & Men of Honor). It will be about the life and death of Notorious B.I.G. (a.k.a. Christopher Wallace), a rags to riches story that inspired tens of thousands culminating into the millions of records sold worldwide by aka Biggie Smalls.

One of the many trailers on the film

I'd expect this movie to be authentically Brooklyn, encapsulating the details from the "Gucci down to the socks" to his famous multi-colored sweaters, and the director will get points for that. But even more importantly one should consider while watching this movie that the murderer of B.I.G has not been brought to justice.

Chris Rock mentions the Biggie Investigation (4:16)

I will look forward to how this movie explains it's theory behind the plot...and I hope they don't Hollywood it too much when it comes to those details. One wonders whether other rap personalities like Nas and Jay-Z will be characterized in the film because they were his contemporaries. I'll also look forward to seeing some of the other details not always covered by the media, it should be an interesting biopic.

R.I.P Biggie Smalls

I LOSE MY MIND for Rosario Dawson lol

I haven't really wanted to go and see a movie in awhile, but the movie SEVEN POUNDS with Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, and Woody Harrelson should be a good flick judging from what I've heard so far (i've been told that it has a well written script, an intricately woven story-line).

Rosario Dawson was a government agent running around in the movie Eagle Eye the last time I saw her, but this time she plays a terminally ill young woman and she's one of the seven strangers who affects Will Smith in the movie.

She said: "it was funny and actually very precious to see how nervous and shy Will was about it (the Love-Scene). Before we went in for our kiss, he was literally psyching himself up, like, “Yo, we're gonna kill this scene!” and I'm like, “Uh, yeah, Will, I brushed my teeth today, we're all good."

I love her...
