Miguel Jardine: CEO of VermiSoks, Worm Wine, a system for growing organic produce

Via: vermisoks.com

The world is confronted by a myriad of problems. When is somebody going to do something? I want to introduce you to someone who is doing something...Miguel Jardine, founder and CEO of VermiSoks, talks about Worm Wine, a system for growing organic produce in harsh environmental conditions.

NO DIGGING!

NO TILLING!

NO AMENDING!

NO WATER!

VermiSoks uses a bit of technology to enhance Nature. The VermiSoks system is a virtuous cycle of green that converts consumable food by-products into lush organic growth. The system is beautiful in its simplicity and provides exponential benefit to all parties involved.

Essentially how it works: The virtuous cycle

1) Fruit, vegetable and food scraps are collected from restaurants, hotels and homes. The food waste is processed to produce gallons of VermiSoks Worm Wine™

2) Worm Wine is applied to VermiSoks – photodegradable mesh tubes – where they harness the power of earthworms to create nutrients to grow organic fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

3) When ready, the crop is harvested and made into tasty dishes. Whatever is left over re-enters the cycle to close the gap on hunger and generate health and wealth for our planet and for us.

Wally Wallington: and the forgotten technology of times past

Via: The Forgotten Technology.com

Wally Wallington is a retired construction worker from Lapeer County, Michigan who demonstrated a method for a person to construct a Stonehenge-like structure using only materials and techniques that do not rely on any modern technology. He has demonstrated this technique on the Canadian science television program Daily Planet.

Using a walnut-sized rock as a pivot, he can show how a single man can move a stone that outweighs a car. Using the same method, he moved his son's barn. And using similarly simple yet effective methods, he has shown that a single man, with no modern tools, or even rope, could, with enough time, erect a monument like Stonehenge. His techniques are comparable to the techniques employed by Edward Leedskalnin when he single-handedly constructed his massive Coral Castle in Florida.

Blackberry Bold 9780 – in White please...

The Bold series has been a favorite with core Blackberry users and many of those users have been wishing and waiting for an upgrade. The arrival of the Blackberry Torch 9800 was received with mixed reviews, and I was never one who liked touch screen technology when it comes to phones.

This up-coming Bold 9780 has no drastic design changes (which I don't really care for because the usual blackberry template is just fine to me) but it does have some internal design changes like the Blackberry 6 operating system, a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash, 624MHz processor and 512MB of internal memory. To top it all off...it comes in White, Perfect!

Aliens meeting with humans: Area 51 Documentary

If this footage is real then we have a lot to think about. The documentary includes the famous Alien interview absolved of any audio so as to not implicate the medical personnel caught in the tape. I have to say I didn't think this tape was authentic, but there was this one moment when the medics wiped the alien's mouth and it looked as if the alien hadn't liked that very much and it moved it's mouth a bit, and I just thought that was interesting, not bad for a puppet if that's what we're seeing.

The only person of interest for me was the person named "Victor" who was very guarded but he answered questions the way I would have answered them if I were in his position, I couldn't help but find him intriguing. The part that caught me was when he was asked about the nature of these extra-terrestrial beings and how he didn't seem to think that they were subject to our space-time continuum; that perhaps they were from an alternate reality or dimension like angels or demons would be.

A Robot That Attends Meetings For You

Via: dailymail.co.uk

A robot who can go to the office for you...lol

Developed by Bob Christopher, a cute looking robot that's essentially a tele-conferencing system on wheels. The robot can alter its height from 3ft to 5.7ft and weighs 2.5st (35lbs), with a main computer and several mini-computers on board. It has an LCD monitor mounted on its head which feeds a webcam image of the telecommuter.

This information is then transmitted to the remote user via a web browser, who can direct the robot with simple keyboard commands. The robot is self-balancing and rolls around on two aluminium and rubber wheels at human walking speed. These Robots are going into production and will be available this fall for $15,000.

Newborn Babies Learn While They’re Asleep

Via: discovermagazine.com

Researchers recruited one-and two-day-old infants for a study that was published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. With each sleeping baby, the researchers played a musical tone and followed that by a puff of air to the eyes, a mild annoyance that caused the infant to automatically scrunch up its eyes. As this sequence of events was repeated, the sleeping babies learned to associate the air puff with the tone, and soon began to to tighten their eyelids as soon as they heard the musical note, even if the air puff didn’t follow. Electrodes stuck to their scalps also showed activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in memory.

Technology I Want: BlackBerry Bold 9800 is a Slider, touchscreen and touchpad

No Weaknesses from what I can see...and it's got that pinch-and-zoom mulititouch feature just like the iphones do. This video has no narration (didn't like that kinda, wanted a play by play of what it can do as the hands navigate through the features, oh well). Personally I'm gonna hold out until I can get my hands on this one.

3-D Body Scanner Abuses: Sneaking A Peak At a Female Coworker's Body

Via: guardian.co.uk

Some guy working security at Heathrow Airport in London caught a female employee accidentally walking through a body scanner and seized the opportunity to look at her privates or whatever the hell it is you see with one of those machines.

Now whether this fellow intentionally misused the equipment for his own perverse kicks or whether he accidentally took a scan out of habit, the young lady was left very shaken: "I can't bear to think about the body scanner thing. I'm totally traumatized. I've spoken to the police about it. I'm in too much of a state to go to work."

By 2010: “10 technologies we were promised but never got”

Via: gizmodo.com

Gizmodo.com had this interesting story about “10 technologies we were promised but never got” in the past 100 years. Some of these things are plain crazy and when you weigh in all the things that weren’t promised compared to what we do have now, we can’t be mad, especially when some places still don’t have running water or electricity!

Cities Under Domes: The architect and all-around visionary R. Buckminster Fuller believed that one day, cities in cold-weather regions could be encased under temperature-controlled Geo-Domes. Fuller argued back in the ’60s that such a dome over New York City would pay for itself in 10 years, as there would be no more need for snow removal. In addition to temperature control, the domes were also supposed to contain germ filters that would have prevented us from getting sick too.

The Videophone was promised (and it exists)

Hitachi: A vending machine that uses finger vein authentication technology

Via: The mainichi daily news

Hitachi Ltd. has announced that it has developed a new payment system based on finger vein authentication technology. Finger vein authentication systems identify individuals based on the unique blood flow patterns in their fingers. With the introduction of the system, office workers can buy drinks and other goods from vending machines or at stores in the company building, simply by placing their fingers over a scanner, instead of using a corporate ID card. Actual payment is made later.

Hitachi is seeking practical applications for the technology after demonstrating the system internally. With its high recognition accuracy, finger vein authentication technology can contribute to preventing ID falsification, and the system has recently attracted a lot of attention as a next-generation biometric identification technology to replace fingerprint authentication, the most commonly-used technology today. The company is aiming for total sales of 110 billion yen between fiscal 2009 and 2011, through collaboration with local companies in Europe, the U.S. and Asia, where fingerprint authentication is widely used in security systems at immigration control or military facilities. Hitachi is also planning to introduce an identity authentication system with higher precision for military applications, by combining finger vein and finger print authentication technologies.
