WATT Electric bike navigates through packed streets

Via: thedesignblog

Devised by French designer Jerome Blanchard, the WATT is a city bike the featuring Shaft Drive Technology and a special hub allows better controls and a quick shift in speed on the city roads. Equipped with an electromagnetic shock absorber, the city bike not just runs smooth on bumpy roads but moves swiftly on stairs as well. The WATT features a special direction axis which effortlessly tilts the short wheels of the bike on sharp curves. Integrating a unique handle that controls the braking system with ABS (anti-locking breaking system), the bicycle ensures complete safety, as the fork stands up and the saddle comes down for a better transfer of the weight, during emergency breaking on the packed roads.

The hub and fork are equipped with an induction block and a small battery to harvest energy from pedaling and the bike’s movement. The energy generated by the bike is enough to feed some gadgets like the GPS, or charging a phone using a USB port. The cycle will communicate with the device interface, to provide information like speed, outstrips crossed, route and also allow geolocation to provide the best information to navigate city traffic. It offers good security and visibility even under trying conditions. All commands of the cycle are simplified and focused on the right hand as well as the axis of fork, on the other hand, the other side is released from all action to let you use your phone, MP3 or GPS while moving through the crowded streets.

Robotics will help those with degenerative muscle diseases

Ironman is a real concept (without the flying of course lol)

This robotic body suit is called "The HAL" stands for (Hybrid Assistive Limb). The robot suit is going into mass production and will be available in Japan sometime soon for around $4,200.

It has the ability to grant its wearer tenfold strength increases during specific actions. It could very well change the lives of people with degenerative muscle diseases, or accident victims who would otherwise need long, difficult rehabilitative therapy to regain basic mobility. And with a five-hour battery life, it could be quite practical for day to day use.

Products like this exoskeleton have a frustrating tendency to remain in the labs and universities that spawned them, usually for reasons of impracticality or cost. But this one is going mainstream

What I think: I think rich people are going to have RoboCop fantasies with this suit and I'd hope that atleast importance is placed on giving a dystrophic child his legs back, rather then just selling to the mass public.

Dubai: The Seawater Vertical Farm

The Dubai Towers design took my breath away...

Some of the most wonderful residential and infrastructure projects exist in the Arab Gulf region, but the latest rendering by Studiomobile will definitely change the course of life in the United Arab Emirates.

The newest project...

Located in Dubai, the Seawater Vertical Farm is an innovative concept that makes use of seawater to cool and humidify greenhouses. It produces adequate humidity, and converts it into fresh water, necessary for irrigation. Considering the fact that there is a dearth of fresh water in Arabian nations, the new endeavor by the Italian architectural firm will turn out to be a life-giving project in the deserted land. The Vertical Farm not just converts the seawater into fresh water, but it also looks like a sculpture or a work of art, enhancing the architectural landscape of the region.

I've got a beautiful plant that's dying...and I'm sad about it.

Thirsty Plants Demand Attention..

We don’t live in futuristic times where plants can talk, or do we?

I have what they call a 'Money Tree' and it's a really beautiful leafy plant that's now dying due to my sister's lack of caring for it...lol. Some plants need very special care, while others, like cactus, buddleia, red-hot poker etc., don’t even require water on a regular basis. But if you are not an expert, it becomes difficult to categorize and cure (or water) your plants at the right time. However, designer Julien Bergignat has designed an innovative potholder, called the “MonPot,” with a built-in rotating timer that alerts users to do the watering (of a particular plant) in time (Hmm...this would have saved my plant much suffering). Inspired by an oven, the potholder is required to be rotated to a particular setting, so it turns off when plant requires water.

I will post pictures of my recovering plant soon enough...lol

Reduce Cars by the year 2030: A 'City-Wide' Urban Scooter System

Via: student.designawards.com

Why buy an electronic scooter when you can rent it? This is the novel idea behind the Link scooter system, designed by Anton Grimes from the University of New South Wales. It’s basically a modular transport solution, which allows users to hire a small, lightweight electronic scooter from a hub. When the user has reached his destination, he can return the scooter at another hub for recharging. The existing light poles will take care of the charging process, which reduces the overall cost of the unit. The scooters come with a pull release mechanism that makes the scooter folding process really easy. Both the scooter and hub are made from strong and durable aluminum castings. The brushed aluminum finish for the unit complements the existing street furniture. The hiring process is quite simple as the user just needs to follow the instructions on the soft interface. The top speed of the scooter is pre-set at 16km/h and the user is issued with a must-wear helmet when they register to use the system. The device was specially conceptualized to suit the Sydney 2030 plan to reduce cars in the CBD and make the city more pedestrian oriented.

Fears, Phobias, and Bad Memories can go away...

Via: Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - A widely available blood pressure pill could one day help people erase bad memories, perhaps treating some anxiety disorders and phobias, according to a Dutch study published on Sunday. The generic beta-blocker propranolol significantly weakened people’s fearful memories of spiders among a group of healthy volunteers who took it, said Merel Kindt, a psychologist at the University of Amsterdam, who led the study.

Finally! A Car Which Can Fly

The team at Terrafugia has fulfilled the fantasy of every driver/pilot: a consumer vehicle that can take to the highways and the skies (is it legal?). Terrafugia has already received 40 advanced orders. The Transition sells for a modest $200,000. Imagine not having to worry about airports anymore, or luggage weight...you can just pack up the suitacases and your family and take to the skies. And wouldn't this be the greatest get away car in a robbery heist? Yea the imagination can run wild when there's no place you can't go.

I guess I better go and take some flying lessons...lol

My Porsche (one day) - Functionality and Nature can co-exist

This photo sums up my future house (and I'm getting closer to)

These photos are an example of how garden space and parking space can work well together. It's a unique design to deal with the loss of front garden areas to car parking space in urban environments.

The docking pad lowers (my car) and blends in with the garden

The minimalist contemporary garden provides ample space to park your vehicle underneath it, but also helps in maintaining the exterior aesthetics of your dwelling, very cool.

Let's see that again...lol

When you really think about it...it can be 2 parking spaces, above and below.

Sexy ain't it?

GPS Navigation is changing the world with something called GOOGLE LATITUDE

That incessant question..."Where you at ?"

You’re hanging out with your co-workers after work when you get a text message from your significant other. “Where you at?” they ask. You respond that you had to work late and you’ll be home in a little while. “That’s interesting,” they say, “Google Latitude says you’re not even at work.” You may recall seeing commercials about services like this. Do you want people to know where you’re at? If so, Google Latitude can make it happen. I can think of a few instances where something like this would have exonerated me from blame lol...

What Does It Do?

Google Latitude integrates with their Maps service to show people you authorize where you are. It’s currently available on Blackberry, S60, and Windows Mobile. Just visit google.com/latitude on your smart phone to get started. I've personally seen the Blackberry Bold use this feature and it is pretty cool when you wanna send someone your location via Maps, especially when your on the road trying to find someone.

The Details…

At first, you would think this is a horribly invasive service, but there are some things to keep in mind:

- Google only saves your last known location.

- There is no history of your whereabouts

- You choose who gets to see your location

- You choose, on an individual basis, which location people get to see (in case you really want to disappear for a while)

- You can also choose how detailed your location information is

Robots of the future, 5 remarkable videos...

This is all real life footage of robots in action, shown here in field tests.

Peep how this dog-like robot avoids slippage on ice, how it avoids falling when kicked by someone, and how it regroups and gathers its balance in snow. Can you imagine one of these dogs protecting your home one day?

Robots are looking more and more human as well. This android chick talks and even gestures with emotion.

This machine is a rubik's cube solving robot. It shows off by rotating the cube after it's done within seconds.

You all might have seen the movie, but this shit really transforms.

The Military is creating exo-skeleton robot-suits, and it's only a demo video lol

60 Minutes: Mind Reading Machine

60 Minutes had a report that I saw the other night, and it seemed like science fiction to me at first and it also tripped me out: mind reading is for real. Neuro-scientists at Carnegie Mellon University used a computer and a functional MRI to read the mind of a CBS producer. These scientists are obviously expanding on MRI technology to read not only brain functions but actual thoughts, and apparently this breakthrough seems very promising. Below is a short clip of the experiment.

Part 1

Part 2

Think about this for a minute: They are working on a machine that is capable of figuring out a human's intention before it results in action. Apparently our brain's prefrontal cortex region is activated whenever we are about to make a decision. Can you imagine this being made available in courtrooms, interrogation chambers etc. Will there be a new set of laws drafted to prosecute a person who has the intention of commiting a crime but does not follow through? Interesting times are definitely lined up ahead of us.

Other Cognitive Technologies that are up the same alley:

Microsoft has a mind reading patent

The Feds can hear you when your phone is shut off

Sweeping for Bugs...lol

This is why I do all of my communications via armored carrier pigeon, rigged to explode should they stop flying. OK I'm obviously kidding, but honestly, the only way around the Feds not listening to you is for you to take your battery out, like...HOLY F*&?%. I had a friend who used to get anomalous feedback while using his cell. He asked me if I thought he was wiretapped, and I said there was only one way to make sure lol, I suggested he get a new phone under someone else's name. He did, and he never heard those anomalous noises again.

Watch this short clip...

This is a multi-tracking system, tracks cell-phones.

What about Camera phones...can they SEE you to?
