These rappers could arguably be the best two MC's to come out of Toronto right now; that being Drake and JD ERA. They both did a track together in solidarity for JD ERA's Coming to America Mixtape, and this joint has been in circulation since last year; so it isn't new to us Torontonians, but it deserved a re-post for all of you Americans and Drake-fans worldwide as a re-introduction to Drake right before his incredible fan-fare fire-started. JD ERA is a rapper to take notice of (he's the first one GOING IN on this track), his lyricism is not to be slept on.
Mary J. Blige has been through the storm and is singing about it on her new album. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul will release her 9th studio album Stronger on November 24. The first single, "The One," features Drake and can be seen in a new AT&T ad airing now. "The album represents who and what I am right now," MJB said on set of the commercial. "I'm a stronger human being after all the growing pains. It's about life, love, change, strengthmostly really knowing who you are and being confident in that."
The follow-up single will be the title track, "Stronger," which can also be found on the soundtrack to More Than a Game. The documentary about NBA star LeBron James' high school days in Akron, Ohio, opens October 2 in select theaters, while the soundtrack arrives September 22. A version of "Stronger" featuring vocals from Chris Brown leaked last month. Listen below.
Here’s Drake on a track entitled "The Winner". Apparently this was suppose to appear on his debut album Thank Me Later with a feature from Kanye West, but there's no Kanye on this record.
Rosa Acosta doing her crazy stretches in this video...that's a good draft pick by Kanye! lol, with cameos from Trey Songz and Rapper Fabolous. I went on twitter to see what people we're saying about the video...and I think the ladies expected the video to be much more romantic with an emphasis on one girl being the best and the fellas expected it to be much more ground-breaking because Kanye was behind the wheel. I'll admit that it was a little boring to me at first, seeing Drake in the staircase chilling by himself with a clipboard in his hand and he even looked as if he wasn't really into the video himself until later on. In the Video Drake tells his team of scantly clad ladies: Take that D like the champions you are...(I was dying LMAO)
Whatever your opinion...this is a World Premier Video, Toronto Stand Up!
If your hatin right now, you don't understand the significance of this young newly developing star from Toronto whose managed to secure a deal that's probably one of the most unprecedented deals in recent music history. For a mixtape to have generated so much buzz and potential, it's phenomenal development and a paradigm shift in the way things are usually done. Definitely a talent to take notice of, even if your just taking notes, study the moves and learn.
Earlier this week, 50 Cent hosted a press event in NYC to announce the launch of his new fragrance, Power by Fifty Cent, that releases exclusively at Macy’s this November. After going in on the appetizers (thanks Curtis!). COMPLEX got a few minutes to sit down with the entrepreneur and talk about about his new business venture, amongst other things. Read on to see how 50 feels about cologne competition with Jay-Z and Diddy and his thoughts on the comparisons between his and Drake’s mixtape buzz…
"I think there’s no comparison between Drake and 50 Cent as artists. He has momentum right now. Great momentum. He has a record on the radio and hasn’t signed a deal. That’s the comparison. But there’s obviously a difference in the type of music and the significance in being able to create aggressive content and have it go that far as opposed to making the record that Drake has on the radio. I sit in front of you as someone who’s received 16 Grammy nominations and I have no trophies, because I chose to write the harsh realities. I stayed true to myself and I’ve taken a little beating behind it. I still have the largest debuting album to date. So if Drake can continue to do what he’s doing now he could potentially have one of the largest debuting albums. I wish him the best."
"He's searched (online) twice as much as Eminem, who just dropped a record but is mostly selling to old fans," said Yves Darbouze, CEO of pLot Multimedia, a New York-based marketing firm behind campaigns for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Alicia Keys, Toyota and Pepsi.
The company pursued a contract with Drake after determining his "blue-chip" marketability, in part by measuring the algorithms of positive vs. negative online comments. The performer, who now shares management with Kanye West and Lil Wayne, scored an "off the charts" 78 per cent, compared with, say, Diddy's career range of 48-58 per cent, or 50 Cent's 38-48 per cent, according to Darbouze.
Memorable Moment... "no blackberry, I aint looking at my phone"
For all the drama following Drake around these days, he's decidedly grounded. He jokes that he still has to overcome the three strikes against him — being an actor, light-skinned and Canadian. But his easygoing nature and articulate thoughtfulness conceal a silent confidence that just might hint that this whole mania thing could be a brewing pandemonium.
"I still have people who are finding out about me, who are still going through that process,"
His goal: "is to keep making that "organic" music..."
The part I liked was when he talked about possibly going independent, working off of his viral internet buzz and putting together on his own what he feels is the best deal possible. Bridging the power of the internet with global distribution deals is becoming the new face of the music game right now. Drake would tip the scales of power momentarily if he were to consider such an idea.
You’ll recognize the line “Party with Azooka” from the “I’m Still Fly” remix by Drake. If you’re in Toronto, this is your chance to really see what it’s like to party with my boy Azooka. Forget Budweiser being the king of beers, Azooka is like the all-time champagne KING of poppin bottles, as he hosts Tuesday night @ Atelier nightclub, brought to you by DJ Wikked and On-Entertainment!
Canadian or otherwise, Maestro Fresh Wes was one of the best to drop in the Golden Era of Rap. Maestro's first two albums are straight up classics and among my favorite LP's. I can arguably say that the album Symphony in Effect was perhaps "the most definitive Canadian hip hop album".
FACT: In 1989 he became the first Canadian rapper to have a Top 40 hit, "Let Your Backbone Slide". As of early 2008, "Let Your Backbone Slide" remained the best-selling Canadian hip hop single of all time, and the only certified gold single in Canadian hip hop history. Eighteen years after its release, Maestro's debut album, Symphony in Effect (1989), remains the top selling Canadian hip hop album of all time; at 190,000 units sold, it is 10,000 shy of double platinum.
Who has this album in tape-format? lol
Anyway...I'm bringing up this tid-bit of Canadian Hip Hop History from the crates for a reason. Maestro's Canadian Hip Hop Sales may finally come close to being matched or surpassed by Canada's newest installment of MC, more notably a rapper by the name of Drake; whose highly anticipated album entitled "Thank me later" may be what creates such waves. When Maestro was at the peak of his power commercially in Canada, he was met with obstacles that didn't help him penetrate as easily into the American market. Drake doesn't seem to be encountering those particular problems, with co-signs from the likes of Lil-Wayne, Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Joe Budden, Bun-B, and a whole slew of others who seem to be welcoming him into the ranks of America's hip hop heavyweights.
All of you state-side are privy to what's being manufactured now...the Drake Train is gaining steam and fans from all over the world are embracing Toronto's talent vicariously through Drake. For those of us a little closer to the Toronto scene we've been watching all of our Toronto MC's and their transitions of ups and downs; we've seen Drake go from Degrassi to a better refined voice in Rap, we remember when he put out two joints alongside Little Brother; and how he was hardly the buzz he is now despite the potential and talent he had then. If Drake doesn't become the biggest selling Canadian Hip Hop Artist, it might not even matter because he may become the most known Canadian hip hop artist ever by virtue of today's wider network of sites and media. It's not much of a foot-race in Canadian rap right now, sadly there's always been that partition between those who we're just as talented and the "chosen one". At one time it was Maestro, and then Kardinal, K-os to a degree, and K’naan has been developing in Europe and Asia and even in parts of the US, but right now it's Drake Season.
DRAKE: “Me and [Kid] Cudi were talking at the [mtvU] Spring Break, just about so many people asking me ‘When’s that Cudi record coming? You and Cudi?’ Me and Cudi gonna make it work,” Drake promised. “Other than that, I got a song with ‘Ye and Wayne. I got a song: me, Wayne and Jeezy. I got some stuff coming to just keep the people entertained until that album hits the shelves, and hopefully my work on So Far Gone will allow me to at least break into the industry in an impressive way.”
