The 1968 Esquire Magazine Cover: The Passion of Muhammad Ali

Shot by George Lois.

" To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? "

- William Shakespeare - To be, or not to be (from Hamlet 3/1)

The idea for this shoot came about when Ali refused to join the US Army’s fight in the Vietnam War because of his recent conversion to the Nation of Islam. This cover shot is one of the most memorable in magazine history; so iconic in fact that I'm having it put to canvas as art for my apartment. The image shows the former heavyweight champion with six arrows in him, which were supposed to kill him.

The direction for this shoot was inspired by the story of St. Sebastian. He was martyred after he converted to Christianity. Legend has it that St. Sebastian was tied to a stake and shot at with six arrows. He survived and was taken to safety, and nursed to health. After this near death experinece, he was to help a blind girl regain her sight by converting her to Christianity. When she could see, he cried out to the Lord and was heard. He was then clubbed to death.

In similar fashion Ali was punished for his beliefs. All the respect he had earned over the course of his career was rendered null and void. He was called a traitor to his country, a draft dodger and was stripped of his heavyweight crown and passport. He is a reminder to me of what the price for having principles is, and though I was born in 1979 without ever having seen him fight outside of highlight reels, he remains an iconic figure to me for his unyielding stance.

Canadian rapper Drake was a recent visitor to one of the world’s perennial football club favorites Manchester United, as he took the opportunity to meet and greet with English centerback Rio Ferdinand. The two conversed over the parallels of each other’s business as entertainers as well as a mutual admiration for one another’s trade.

Architecture: Solar City Tower - Rio Olympics 2016

Via: www.rafaa.ch

For the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Swiss studio RAFAA propose the competition entry ‘Solar City Tower’ that—packed with solar panels and sustainable features—wants to help make Rio’s Olympic Games the first ever zero-carbon games.

From the brief of the international architecture competition: The project under consideration should be located in the bay of the city of Rio de Janeiro on the Cotonduba Island, which is the obligatory approach for aircraft landing and will comprise a vertical structure which will seek to become a symbol for those arriving in Rio, creating an image potent enough to enable Rio to triumph in its bid to host the summer Olympics in 2016. The challenge, therefore, consists of designing an observation tower which will become a symbol welcoming all those who visit Rio de Janeiro, whether they arrive by air or sea.“

Tiger Woods - New Nike Ad - Emo-Marketing

This is what I call Emo-Marketing...evoked on the heels of what could be regarded as the greatest sports scandal of this decade. The monolith Golf figure known as Tiger Woods (in full Nike regalia) can be seen staring with a sadness into the lens of the camera while you hear his father's voice (with every intention of trying to convey that Tiger's dad is ashamed of his son). The people at Nike are brilliant...

Earl Woods: "I want to find out what your feelings are, and did you learn anything?"

Paintballing: the sport for I AM IN DEMAND.COM

Spike Lee's Buffalo Soldiers inspired me...

I've decided that paintballing is going to be the official sport for I AM IN DEMAND.Com. I've even got interests to expand into this sector and bring it into a more hip hop influenced cultural feel. I've seen alot of paintball enthusiasts who sound like nerds most of the time, and typical law enforcement and ex-reject military types being the one's who lead in this industry. I would like to try and re-package the paintball culture and inject into it a more youthful hip hop culture, much like how Golf has taken on a larger audience through the efforts of a more youthful Tiger Woods. Stay tuned for developments as I brand this from A to Z. But I personally like the sport because it combines all the heart-pounding buzz of the most extreme sports and it includes strategy and tactical precision to create the all-around adventure.

My favorite paintball handgun, The Tiberius 8

Sexy aint it? lol
