Public Speaker: Greg Stielstra - How Social Connection Influences Choice

The digital revolution has enabled latent human inclinations and changed the shape of social connection; transforming the way information, ideas and trends spread. Discover the new paradigm and why, if you want to influence culture, you must begin by influencing your neighbor.

What I gathered from this video is; reaching everyone at the same time will never be as effective as reaching those who've already established a clear evidenced power with what's called "social proof" - in other words hit up everyone whose cool because they'll affect the most amount of "approvals" and the many others who are like them will approve also...lol

Donald Draper of Mad Men: This picture conveys how I feel...

I came across this picture while surfing online, and it's a picture of the television series character Donald Draper from "Mad Men". I'm a fan of the show (Mad Men and the TV show Entourage are the only TV show's I'll watch) because their relative to the field I work in where we take unambiguous marketing problems and solve them. Lately I've come across some inspirational client briefs that are fantastic; and once their developed I feel that these ideas will make enormous waves of change.

The only 3 things that are on my mind in 2010:

‘Increase brand awareness’
‘Launch my product into the market’
‘Make people love and engage with my brand’

Anyone who can do those three things will be successful. In a lot of ways today's professional marketing departments have changed the relationships that agencies have had with client organizations and the roles that they play for them. I'm feeling very good about the projects that I have heaped upon my desk for this coming new year, because I am getting more intrinsically involved, more emotionally attached, and I'm putting the feeling that you see in that dominant pose above into everything that I do.

Dave Hill Photography: commercial and music photographer

Via: davehillphoto.com

I just sorta stumbled over Dave Hill Photography, and its pretty impressive. Born and raised in California Dave is a commercial and music photographer living in Los Angeles, and he seems pretty passionate about his work. It has alot of Hi-Def Resolution and retouching but the results still look great enough to mention.

Advertising: A billboard in New Zealand that bleeds when it rains

An ad agency in New Zealand made a series of billboards that remind drivers to slow down and "drive to the conditions" during the rainy season. The billboards, which feature a young person's face, start bleeding whenever it rains.

"The advertising agency that came up with the sign says the goal was to reduce the road toll by creating maximum awareness through unease." It's pretty terrifying, but according to the ad agency, there hasn't been a fatality since.

Great campaign created by Adam Reynolds for Conde Nast Traveler with a staging of high-heeled shoes with famous monuments in place of the heels. The ads are meant to inspire travel and wanderlust, with captions like “First stop: all men in their tracks.”

Advertising Right Now: The New King of Blow Job Ads.

"Fill your desire for something long, juicy and flame-grilled..." Well, this ad via Singapore for the BK Super Seven Incher is the new leading "most overtly blow-jobby ad" I've ever seen. Whose idea was it to put that misogynistic touch; making the woman look like a blow-up doll, and note the Photo shopped-enhanced creamy white mayo, these geeky Artist types really need to get out more...lol

The Barbie Doll turns 50

This pic kinda tripped me out at first, but then when I looked at it again I thought about how they should use this pop-cultural iconic toy in advertisements against smoking at a very young age...lol. Barbie's body has come under criticism for offering girls unrealistic expectations of womanhood, and even for inspiring eating disorders and related pathologies, re-inventing her throughout the decades has been a work in progress.

The Barbie doll is sold in over 150 countries, has represented more than 50 nationalities and ethnicities. 'Totally Hair Barbie' was released in 1992. The doll's extra-long hair reached all the way to her toes. more than 10 million of these dolls were sold world wide, making 'totally hair barbie' the best-selling barbie doll in mattel's history. They should make an Obama and Michelle Obama Barbie...lol...how well would that sell?

Sheit...I'm just giving my ideas away for free huh...

Ads by way of text message...Music Artists are using text message marketing.

Rapper LiL John: “Once you get popular, you have a brand, and once that happens you have to market that brand.”

In my line of work this is called "Association Marketing" and its HUGE...with the emergence of newer technologies changing the landscape of how consumerism is translated, hip hop culture in particular is availing itself of every new technology that's out there. Never before has it been so important for music artists to focus on their ventures outside the recording studio, and they know it. In no other genre of music, has this diversification become as common or lucrative. Hip-hop fashion, footwear and accessories alone are a $2.6-billion industry and Hip Hop music is a $5-billion dollar ring tone market. Even late-blooming rap pioneers like Grandmaster Flash was said to have released a children’s book a few years ago that came with a fitness DVD.

DJ Quik said: "You've got to have an auxiliary income that far exceeds what your bread and butter is.”

$$$ Revenue is slower due to less demand - and in the world of music sales this isn't no different, layoffs within companies have hurt morale, and credit is even harder to come by - but what is truly worrisome for business owners is this question: How much should I spend on advertising? There tends to be a correlation between what is invested on advertising and the revenue that is generated. And if there isn’t, then you’ve been spending far too much on advertising.

I have heard of the coming advent of ads by way of text message, and I believe this area of marketing will expand even more with music related content. Unlike traditional advertising media, i.e. newsprint, radio, and television, text messaging can prove to be more cost effective (Just ask Barack Obama, who inspired a people-powered revolution and commanded organizers via text-messaging). This is the new age of viral marketing or what experts are calling "Social Media Marketing". I've read up on a company called Ecotextsmart (owned by parent company Salient Mobility) and they operate on a permission-based text-messaging system, urging subscribers to text in, because of incentives. Incentives typically, are things like - join our mailing list to receive discounts, sales notices, etc and it works.

This is something I'll be looking into alot more...

Entertainment Marketing headed for a new high in 2009

Because fame and corporate america need each other...

I personally couldn't be happier for what's ahead in 2009...because I am a student of music and it's entertainment marketing in general. I am in the business of developing artists, and transitioning them through what is marketably viable for today's music scene - where record sales aren't enough. Celebrity appearances are an advertising staple, with one survey last year suggesting as much as 20 percent of all ads featured a TV, film or sports star. Last year (the year of Obama) was a stellar year for black celebrities in particular who created, endorsed, and cashed out on brands ranging from champagne to satellite TV.

2009 is already opening up with some very interesting developments...

Rapper Soulja Boy is becoming a Cartoon Series...

Soulja Boy may not be the kind of Hip Hop I'd like, but within the corporate playing field there is a place for everybody who fits the mold. Soulja Boy has been able to make a name for himself that’s permanently etched into today’s pop culture. His newest project is “Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em: The Animated Series”, a 2D/3D cartoon hybrid that’s a little bit South Park. And I predict that he may end up doing better in this arena than Andre 3000, M.C. Hammer, and Kid ‘n’ Play.

Mr. Chicken & Beer, Ludacris becomes the first...

The Atlanta-bred rapper’s new album “Theater of the Mind” will experiment with a new technology called HDS (High Definition Sound) which is basically a higher fidelity of surround sound that isolates Luda’s voice and his instrumentals in a way that makes every single note clear. His album is the first rap record to be released in HDS. His album will not only be released on CD but in special BluRay format as well...He's definately pushing into new things.

Kobe Bryant is enterprising Online...

Want the latest information on Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant?

The recently re-launched KB24.com

This website is not just a clean charcoal and chrome design, but it has some social networking and fan interaction features (video, audio, photos, chats, personal profile pages, etc.) and a $50 price tag to access them all. You also get a T-shirt with that purchase. If you’re looking to go the free route, Kobe’s new site still offers some information. The “News” portion of the site functions a bit like a blog, offering information on Kobe’s media appearances, games, and new kicks available in the KB24.com store. I'm interested to see how well this site does...

Steve Stoute: Translating Urban Culture to Corporate America...

Many leading global and corporate companies are fast-tracking initiatives that enhance diversity in brand imaging and advertising; and that's because diversity representation has now been changed from a persistent problem to a competitive edge. While this trend in marketing is now becoming popular, one man had strategically positioned himself ahead of the pack; and that businessman was Steve Stoute.

STEVE STOUTE'S TRANSLATION CONSULTATION

Steve Stoute (pictured above to the left of Jay-Z) was a former record executive who turned into an urban-marketing guru, and he is now the marketer behind many celebrity and brand pairings. He's matched-up Justin Timberlake with McDonald’s, Jay-Z and Reebok and Hewlett-Packard with Gwen Stefani. He brokered a brilliant deal between R&B star Beyonce and Samsung to make what was called the B’phone, a limited-edition cellphone that came preloaded with photos and videos of the singer. It is marketing ideas like these that are opening the doors of an ever more welcoming corporate America.

His company provided strategic counsel and marketing communications guidance for Chevrolet and other GM vehicle brands in the U.S on key projects. He helped expand GM's appeal to young, diverse, well-educated consumers living in key metropolitan markets in the US, particularly coastal markets - just in case you thought he was only a celeb-marketer; Steve Stoute is breaking barriers. And just as I had stated above, large and very powerful conglomerates are increasingly interested in hiring think-tanks that cater to the hip hop influenced market of consumers.

Urban culture is immensely innovative

Steve Stoute says: "The power of Hip-Hop and the culture it harbors is breaking down walls in corporate America daily". He's done this mainly by establishing connections between Fortune 500 companies and celebrities from music, sports, entertainment and fashion. He's an inspiration but he hasn't a monopoly on this particular business model and this connection between urban America and corporate America is to be a continuous one.
