OB Obrien - heads a Canadian label that's slated to be the next big thing: Funny Colour Money

The dude goes by the name "O.B" (and he often says: It's OB Baby). Matt O'Brien: a native of Hamilton Ontario (that's Steel City - in CANADA) and he's a consummate music producer, song writer and artist who I think is poised to do great things for the Canadian Music scene and for Hip Hop in general. I've known of his music for awhile and I've witnessed his progression and I can't say that I'm not a fan of his work, I think he's uniquely talented and his business acumen has garnered him a label deal that enables him to have his own label called...Funny Colour Money. La SAPE: A society of Africans in France devoted to high fashion

This is a documentary detailing the lifestyle of Africans who've subscribed to the high fashion sensationalism of famed Congolese musician Papa Wemba; who first started La SAPE (An Acronym for the "Société Ambianceurs et Persons Élégants" which means "Society of Ambiance and Elegant People") first launched back in the Congo in the 1970's. Those who subscribe to this lifestyle are called "Sapeur" and these men would rather starve than look poor lol. To some, these people are fashion victims who've forsaken priorities and succumb to criminal activities to maintain their lavish lifestyles. To others they are regarded as rock stars who can be seen roaring through the Congo on mopeds in 1,000 dollar suits, and to some people they inspire self-determination, to at least look good.

In France...

These young men are also known as ”les Parisiens” – and they are a cultural affront to the older Congolese generation, who speak of ”authenticity,” anti-colonialism and Marxism. For the , the only ”ism” to follow is narcissism. And his manifesto is the society pages of glossy French-language publications like Africa Elite and Jeune Afrique. These publications breathlessly chronicle what they call ”le Paris black,” or Parisian black society. Paparazzi snap Africa’s beautiful people dining at African restaurants like Le Fouta Toro, Le Sakkara and Le Dogon – or dancing at African nightclubs. These spots, which have existed for decades, have recently become chic with the growth of an affluent African bourgeoisie. So to some people the Sapeur is a fashion icon, someone to be admired.

Excerpt from the magazine above: "The ancient world was devoid of racism. A person's skin if dark was irrelevant. Artwork from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome show a clear awareness of racial features and skin tone, but there is little evidence that darker skin was seen as a sign of inferiority. When European colonization took over Africa in the 19th century, it was then that Western scholars payed attention to the color of the Nubian's skin, to uncharitable effect"

A personal story: I remember when I was in high school, we'd have a brief cursory glance at Egypt and then we were whisked away to Greece and Rome really quickly; and the chapters on those civilizations were always way more extensive and comprehensive. We we're taught blatantly that Greece and Rome are the blueprint for western civilization, but no one discusses from where the ingredients came that helped flavor there civilizations. We we're shown Roman art, and naturally it was newer (meaning not as ancient) and the pieces were intact and Roman euro centric noses were never hacked off like the much older Egyptian Afro-centric noses. It was drummed into us that the art and the architecture got "better with time and became more technically advanced" with more richer and opulent qualities. Perhaps the Egyptians knew that "less meant more" and they had an architectural tendency which focused more on structural alignments with the stars, re-creating with stunning accuracy the alignment of celestial bodies above by building structures that mirrored them below. I remember feeling pretty shitty as a kid, because Egypt always seemed to excite me, it had intrigue, mystery and allure, but it was never properly explained, examined or fairly judged. It wasn't until years later that I was given an account by my grandfather that helped open my eyes.

Egypt is the oldest withstanding civilization, arguably none of the other civilizations lasted for as long as she did, and every power of this kind has a source, that helps revive it during times of regression. One such regression happened in ancient Egypt and it was halted by a resurgence of culture and by a revisiting of the old ways instituted by "The Nubians" from the south of Egypt. The northern part of Egypt was always more multi-cultural (it still is till this day). Northern Egypt's proximity to other cultures from the Mediterranean and the middle east made the northern part of Egypt more integrated, and the inter-marrying of cultures both strengthened and weakened Egypt sometimes. The North was susceptible to invaders and foreign influences made Egypt stray away from it's own original roots. Whenever this would happen, Egypt would stretch out it's hands for Nubia, and Nubia would trade Gold and other valuable resources with it's Northern brother.

Egypt enjoyed a few thousand years of relative obscurity before she became famous to her neighbors, the desert lands to the south and the seas to the east and north of her helped shield her from many invaders. The Nile River was the wealth of Egypt, it filled her granaries to immeasurable limits, and when the people we're no longer worried about food, a rich and sensible culture emerged. They cared about healing, spirituality and enlightenment. They chartered the stars and traced there trajectory. Pyramid construction was intrinsic to there way of life, in fact there are more pyramids in the southern part of Egypt than in the north. My grandfather told me that the Nubians were always the last line of defense for Egypt, when Egypt lost it's way in the 25th dynasty, it was the Nubians who resurrected pyramid construction when it hadn't been attempted in the north in over 800 years.

You mean to tell me that you could stop doing something for 800 years, the Nubians strengthen and unify the entire country, rid it of invaders, start the building of pyramids that the notherners forgot how to do; and they aren't the original custodians and maintainers of Egyptian culture? The northern and southern part of Egypt was like a relationship between the parent and the child, sometimes the parent leaves the child alone, and sometimes the child comes back and says daddy, mommy, can you show me how you used to do that again! (God rest his soul...for the many lessons he gave me, don't worry grandpa I'm not blind anymore).

My 2 cents about the Music Business and Entertainment Marketing in general

I wear many hats, Im a brand manager, an account executive for a marketing firm, I do artist development and research, I got my break in entertainment by doing logistical site planning for concerts.

I'm immersed in the music industry, I've put countless hundreds of thousands of miles on my car because of it, I've boarded trains and planes in pursuit of musical happiness and I've slept on many studio couches after burning the midnight oil. I'm 32 years old but I'm constantly around young people, I frequent the most viral of blogs and I read the comments of both satisfied and dissatisfied consumers everywhere. I'm constantly learning and I'm always networking and building relationships. The one thing I'm always looking for when I work with people is the "core principles" that will give me a sign that there is a foundation worth building upon, that's number one!

That foundation is your talent...your potential!

I've worked with corporate brands, music artists, designers, practitioners of Yoga and even spiritual advisers, and no matter what there talent is...they've got to want it as bad as I want it for them. You have to understand that you're the head of your business and be as focused on your career as you want me to be. A lot of times people will do deals and expect you to do everything for them. It takes teamwork. So I look for people who have a strong work ethic and are willing to go the extra mile. People approach me often and say "Will you be my manager" and my response is always immediate and I say sure...but what have you managed? And they almost always look at me with a puzzled face!?! lol



I can't manage what you haven't managed yet, if there's something you've built...I can manage it. If your a music artist, do you have a web presence? have you built up a following that requires management? have you performed live? have you booked your own shows? Is your workload so incredibly overwhelming that you need professional assistance?

These are the kinds of people I want to manage and help...

I help people create believability, your act has to have a certain degree of believability already, but I help people buy into it more. In order for this to happen however, there has to be a real strategy behind that act. To break a new musical act, you have to come with two singles and two visuals first to create the definition, to see if people are going to buy into it before you put out an album. You have to come up with a grass-roots marketing campaign to help build the image that surrounds your artistry. All of this is not even possible unless you've established a foot-print for yourself (a mixtape, live shows, web presence, i.e youtube, tumblr, facebook, twitter).

THE NUMBER ONE THING ANY NEW ARTIST MUST DO IS INVEST IN THEMSELVES!!! Don't be ashamed to go out there and get a job, wait tables, bar-tend, drive a taxi...lol...anything that will support your dream, because your going to need a good video director, pay for studio time and mastering, and you'll have to hire a decent graphic designer to do your album art. This is your demo to the world...make it your best effort ever, and when your at this level...THEN you can submit for a manager, a publicist, public relations expert, these people would be more then happy to help you, if that work ethic can be displayed.



And that's my 2 cents for the day...lol

Ethiopia Habtemariam: The highest-ranking African-American female at a major record label

Ethiopia Habtemariam was born on September 24, 1979, and she headed Universal Music Publishing Group as Senior Vice President & Head of Urban Music. She will be taking over Sylvia Rhone's position at Motown Records. That makes her the highest-ranking African-American female (of Ethiopian descent) at a major record label. Motown is a division of Universal Music Group, the World's largest Music company.

She “strongly believed Motown should be youth-driven,” an individual close to the executive told TheWrap. “It’s all about youth. They’re the ones who open the doors.”

How did she get there?

Ms. Habtemariam has signed some of music's biggest superstars, including; multi-platinum recording artist and songwriter Chris Brown, breakthrough artist and songwriter Keri Hilson, gold recording artist and songwriter Ciara. She's steered the careers of BMI Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year Polow Da Don, Andre Merrit, Candice Nelson, Balewa Muhammad, Ezekiel Lewis (The Clutch), Rock City, and Brian Kennedy to name a few.

She also oversee’s one of the hottest urban rosters in music — from multi-platinum and GRAMMY award winning acts like Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Eminem, Jeremih, Amerie, Ashanti, Jill Scott, Prince, Nicole Sherzinger, Ice Cube, Raphael Saadiq, Swizz Beatz, DMX, Asher Roth, Beastie Boys, R.Kelly, Babyface, Keyshia Cole, and many more. She is a native of Atlanta and she began interning at LaFace Records at age 14. Hired there as an assistant right after high school, she found herself in Los Angeles in 2001 working as a creative manager for Edmonds Music Publishing. Universal came calling two years later.

So essentially she's an executive from the publishing side of the business being given a very senior role within Universal's corporate structure (she is credited with wooing Justin Bieber into a global publishing deal) business moves like that help you a lot. With her background in music publishing and a sharp focus on discovering hit talent, Habtemariam envisions developing Motown to be a magnet for young trendy stars who appeal to the industry’s core youth audience.

It would be good to see how she and Chairman Barry Weiss work together, hopefully he'll be forward thinking as well, just as he was in the 80's during the maturation stages of Hip Hop when he was keenly aware of what the trends were then. Weiss's resume is well established even now (Britney Spears, Usher, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake, 'N Sync and T-Pain) and now with Ms. Habtemariam steering the ship at Motown, things should be interesting indeed.

Ethiopia Habtemariam: "The labels think they dictate what's hot to the consumer. That's the biggest mistake. You can never underestimate the intelligence of the consumer, especially the youth. I'm not going to mention any specific songs, but there are records that are just hits at radio but don't translate into sales. So you have labels that will chase the charts or what's happening in different areas and then will sign those acts.

But they're not quality acts. That's because artist development doesn't exist anymore. I remember when people knew the names of everyone in a group. Now labels might rely heavily on production companies to give an artist some definition. That's because labels have smaller staffs and so many artists. As such, there's a short list when it comes to the next generation of urban music superstars"

- She definately knows what she's talking about...

2013: Will Smith and screenwriter Randall Wallace, set to make "The Last Pharaoh"

The Egyptian Pharoah Taharqa: a member of the Nubian dynasty of Egypt, and he was more a ruler over the Kingdom of Kush. His reign can be dated from 690 BC to 664 BC. He was the son of Piye, the Nubian king of Napata who had first conquered Egypt. Mentioned by Greek historian Strabo as one of the greatest military tacticians in the world. He's believed to be Tirhakah, King of Ethiopia, who's mentioned in the Old Testament (noted in the bible in 2 Kings 19:9; and Isaiah 37:9 as Tirhakah) who drove the Assyrian king Sennacherib away from destroying Jerusalem.



Taharqa wasn't just a fighter, he was devoted to peaceful works like restoring temples, and building sanctuaries all over Nubia and Egypt. Nevertheless, his biggest claim to fame is fighting the Assyrians, who invaded Egypt in 677. He didn't exactly defeat them -- they took the city of Memphis and established the 26th dynasty, and Taharqa was driven back to Nubia, where he died in 664.



This movie definitely has the potential of an action packed story because Egypt's history is replete with drama and adventure, but I'm curious as to how it's going to be fleshed out. With screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart) at the helm, I am willing to bet that Taharqa will become a mixture of King Leonidas and William Wallace. The saving of Jerusalem is, I think, the high point of the story and has the most historical relevance ... but I'm sure it will romantically illustrate how he attempted to defend his homeland, and that's reportedly what the film will focus on.



My Conclusion: It will be very interesting to see Will Smith deliver in the history genre and it will have to do better than movies like Troy and Alexander. I will also say what most people won't say...that Will Smith is one of the lightest skinned, socially accepted black actors in Hollywood and he'll play one of the blackest of Pharoahs in Ancient Egypt; so he'll have to go work on his tan, but regardless, I couldn't think of anyone better because Will Smith is the biggest box office draw in the business and a movie of this kind needs his type of commercial appeal, he's black enough to pull if off...lol. Something the movie won't show you is how Historically, it was really the armies of Taharqa's nephew Tantamani who were the ones who briefly wrested control of Egypt from the Assyrians before being driven back to Nubia, making Tantamani, not Taharqa, the last Pharaoh of the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty, but oh well. Another point to bring up is this; President Obama's first term ends on January 20 2013, effectively though on November 4 2012 (if not re-elected). A month before or after the Mayan Doomsday of December 21, 2012. Just around this time is when Will Smith will galvanize the public mind around a black pharoah (symbolically this is Obama) as the last pharoah/president defending the homeland, against the Assyrians (who people will read as being the Arabs, i.e Iran and the Taliban). No one does prescriptive programming like Hollywood lol.

The Queen of Sufi Music: Abida Parveen sings the words of Poet Bulleh Shah

The queen of Sufi Music, Abida Parveen has amazing tonal and voice control. I can appreciate music of this kind because I'm international in my mindset, I embrace different sounds and my heart is expanded to things outside of the box. Even without knowing the words...you can really feel the passion and the sincerity.

Bulleh Shah: is one of the greatest poets and philosophers of the last 1300 years, equal to Ghalib. He should be made compulsory reading in the schools of Pakistan, India and all other countries, if the world were given these translations in mass, we may then learn to respect each other and put an end to many wars.
